Senior Dining Room Renovation

On September 1, 2022, the Oakland County Board of Commissioners passed Resolution #22-280 Appropriating American Rescue Plan Act funding to support the Oakland Together Senior Initiatives. These initiatives include funding for the Senior Center Matching Grant program. This grant provides financial assistance on a matching basis to local governments and non-profit senior organizations in Oakland County for senior centers' enhancements such as capital, technology, infrastructure, equipment improvements, and/or professional development. The City of Troy's Recreation Department is thrilled to have been awarded the full grant of $250,000.

Renovations of this project that will use grant funding will include improvements to the Senior Dining Room, along with Shuffleboard and Bocce Courts outside of the North Entrance of the Community Center. Please see the current state of the renovations below:

Senior Dining Room (Room 402)

The Senior Dining Room, room 402A, and the Friends of Troy Seniors Office are scheduled to be closed from Aug 1, 2024–Sept 3, 2024 for improvements.

Improvements in Room 402 (Dining Room) include: fresh paint, new acoustic paneling on the walls, new flooring along the perimeter of the room, new furniture, and a book nook with cozy furniture. Improvements in room 402A include: fresh paint, new carpeting, new blinds, new furniture, and a large television.

We will update this section as work is completed and a ribbon cutting/grand opening experience is planned.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What new programs or events will happen in the renovated Dining Room?
A: In the renovated Dining Room space, we have a few new programs that will be offered in the immediate future. On the schedule for fall include Prize Bingo and Monday Movies. In the near future, we plan to offer more lectures, exercise classes, and special events in this space.

Q: Are there any new amenities that the Dining Room will have?
A: There will be a cozy "book nook" that allows for people to stay, relax, and read in this space. There will also be a large Smart TV in room 402A which will allow for Movie Days, as well as a more intimate space for lectures and other programs.

Q: Will the Friends of Troy Seniors Office be closed at all?
A: Yes, the FOTS office will also be closed from August 1-September 3. If you need to contact them at all, please reach out via phone at 248.526.2608 or via email at fotstroy@gmail.com. They will be checking both periodically.

Q: Will Congregate Hot Lunch be served during the closure?
A: Yes, Congregate Hot Lunch will be served during most of the closure in a Troy Community Center Banquet Room. Click here to view a calendar of where lunch will take place each day.

Q: Will there be a ribbon cutting or grand opening event?
A: Yes, the ribbon cutting will be held on Thursday, October 10th at 1 pm. An open house event will follow until 3 pm - inviting people to see the renovated space and learn about new program offerings.

Q: Will the renovated Dining Room serve coffee?
A: Coffee will be served courtesy of Meals on Wheels Monday through Friday 8 am-2 pm. This will be free of charge.

Q: What will the hours of this room be?
A: Seniors will be invited to enjoy this space Monday through Friday 8 am-4 pm. During this time period if programs are not taking place, seniors are welcome to sit and enjoy the space. The room will also be open on weekends and evenings on occasion for special events and programs. 

Q: Can I reserve this space?
A: At this time, this space is not available for reservation or rent.

Q: Can Groups and Clubs use this space? 
A: Due to planned programs and daily lunch, Groups and Clubs cannot use room 402 or 402A at this time.

Q: Can people of all ages use this space? 
A: This room will be the Community Center's dedicated "Senior Center" space. Those younger than the age of 50 will not necessarily be asked to leave the space, but the room and programs within the room are designed for people 50 years and older.

Q: Is this room wheelchair accessible?
A: Both entrances to the Dining Room will have automatic door entry, and will be maneuverable with a wheelchair.

Q: Will lunch still be in there after renovation?
A: Yes.

Q: What is the room's color scheme?
A: It's a surprise!

Q: Will all senior programs in the Community Center take place in rooms 402 and 402A? 
A: No, programs may use other rooms throughout the facility. For example, concerts will continue to take place in rooms 304 and 305.
